A complete guide to US A2P 10DLC registration for nonprofits, shuls, schools and businesses.

How to Get Approved for US A2P 10DLC Registration: The Complete Guide (2026)

If you've ever tried to send mass texts for your organization and had messages blocked or flagged as spam, there's a good chance you haven't completed your US A2P 10DLC registration — or your registration isn't set up correctly.

This guide answers every question we get asked about A2P 10DLC registration, including whether you need an EIN, whether you need a website, how long it takes, and what actually gets applications rejected.

What is A2P 10DLC?

A2P stands for Application-to-Person. 10DLC stands for 10-Digit Long Code — which is just a standard local phone number.

In plain English: A2P 10DLC is the mandatory registration system that allows businesses and organizations to legally send mass text messages to US phone numbers. Every major US carrier — AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile — now requires it.

If you send texts through a platform like Evant without being registered, your messages will be blocked entirely. As of February 2025, carriers block 100% of unregistered traffic. Not slowed down. Not filtered. Blocked.

Who Needs to Register?

If you are sending SMS messages from a software platform to people in the United States — you need to register. This includes:

  • Shuls and synagogues sending event reminders
  • Schools sending parent notifications
  • Nonprofits running fundraising campaigns
  • Businesses sending appointment reminders or promotions
  • Any organization sending mass texts to a community

It doesn't matter if you're sending 50 texts or 50,000. If it's going through a platform, it's A2P and it requires registration.

Do I Need an EIN to Register?

Yes — for a Standard Brand registration, you need a valid EIN (Employer Identification Number). This is the business tax ID issued by the IRS.

Your EIN must match your legal business name exactly as it appears in IRS records. Even small discrepancies — like "LLC" vs "L.L.C." — can cause your registration to be rejected.

Important 2026 update: Your EIN must be at least 15 days old before you can use it for registration. Newly formed entities sometimes get rejected simply because the EIN hasn't been active long enough.

What if I don't have an EIN? If you're a sole proprietor with no employees and no EIN, you can register under the Sole Proprietor path. However this comes with lower messaging limits and fewer approved use cases. For most organizations — shuls, schools, nonprofits — a Standard Brand registration with an EIN is the right path.

Do I Need an Official Website?

Yes. You need a live, working website with a visible privacy policy and opt-in language.

Carriers will actually verify your website during the review process. If your site is down, under construction, or doesn't have a privacy policy — your registration will be rejected.

Your website needs to include:

  • A clear description of what your organization does
  • An opt-in form or clear explanation of how people consent to receive texts
  • A Privacy Policy that specifically mentions SMS communications
  • Your organization's legal name matching your EIN registration

Pro tip: Your email domain should match your website domain. If your company is EvantOrg.com but you're registering with a Gmail address, that inconsistency can trigger a rejection.

What is the Registration Process Step by Step?

A2P 10DLC registration has two parts: Brand Registration and Campaign Registration.

Step 1 — Brand Registration This establishes who you are. You submit your legal business name, EIN, business type, address, website, and contact information to The Campaign Registry (TCR) — the centralized database that all US carriers use to verify senders.

Step 2 — Campaign Registration This establishes what you're sending and why. You describe your messaging use case, provide sample messages, explain how people opt in to receive texts, and link to your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

With Evant, we handle both steps for you. You don't need to contact TCR directly or figure out the technical submission process.

What Does a Good Campaign Description Look Like?

This is where most registrations fail. Vague descriptions like "customer notifications" or "community updates" get rejected. Carriers want specifics.

Bad example: "We send notifications to our members."

Good example: "This campaign is used to send SMS notifications to members of [Organization Name] regarding upcoming events, community alerts, fundraising initiatives, and important organizational updates. End users receive messages only after explicitly opting in via a web form. Messages may be sent in English and Hebrew."

The more specific and accurate your campaign description, the faster your approval.

What Opt-In Language Do I Need?

Every registration requires proof that your recipients consented to receive texts. Your opt-in language must include:

  • Your organization's legal name
  • What types of messages they'll receive
  • Message frequency (e.g., "up to 4 msgs/week")
  • "Msg & data rates may apply"
  • How to opt out (reply STOP)
  • How to get help (reply HELP)
  • A link to your Privacy Policy

Example opt-in language: "I agree to receive automated SMS messages from [Organization Name] at the phone number provided. Messages may include community updates, event notifications, and alerts. Msg frequency varies (up to 5 msgs/week). Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. Privacy Policy: [URL]"

How Long Does A2P 10DLC Registration Take?

Typically 1 to 4 weeks, depending on your use case and how busy the carrier review queue is.

Here's a general breakdown:

  • Brand Registration: 1–3 business days
  • Campaign Registration: 3–10 business days for standard use cases, longer for special use cases

You can pay a Fast Track fee (around $3) to expedite brand registration to approximately 3 business days.

Note: the clock doesn't start until your submission is complete and accurate. Incomplete or inconsistent applications restart the clock.

How Much Does It Cost?

Fees as of 2026:

  • Standard Brand Registration: approximately $4–$25 one-time fee
  • Campaign Registration: approximately $10–$11 per month per campaign
  • Fast Track fee: approximately $3 (optional, for faster brand approval)

These fees are paid to The Campaign Registry (TCR) and are separate from your SMS platform fees. At Evant, we're transparent about all registration costs upfront — no surprises.

What Are the Most Common Reasons for Rejection?

Based on our experience registering hundreds of organizations through Evant, here are the most common rejection reasons:

  1. Mismatched business information — your legal name, EIN, and website don't match each other
  2. Vague campaign description — not specific enough about who is sending, who is receiving, and why
  3. Missing or broken opt-in URL — your website opt-in page isn't live or accessible
  4. Weak Terms of Service — your T&C doesn't explicitly reference SMS consent
  5. No Privacy Policy — or a Privacy Policy that doesn't mention SMS data
  6. Inconsistent email domain — your contact email doesn't match your website domain
  7. New EIN — your EIN is less than 15 days old

Can Nonprofits and Religious Organizations Register?

Absolutely. Nonprofits, shuls, schools, churches, and community organizations are among the most common A2P 10DLC registrants. Fundraising, event notifications, community alerts, and member communications are all fully approved use cases.

The same rules apply — you need an EIN, a live website, and proper opt-in documentation. Many nonprofits use their 501(c)(3) EIN for registration.

What Happens If I Don't Register?

Since February 2025, unregistered messages are blocked entirely by all major US carriers. Your texts simply won't be delivered — no error message, no bounce notice. They just disappear.

Beyond blocked messages, non-compliance with TCPA (the federal law governing business texting) can result in fines of $500 per unsolicited text, rising to $1,500 per message for willful violations. These are serious numbers for any organization sending mass communications.
