Christmas church text message templates work best as a short series, not one big blast. Send an Advent kickoff on November 28, the day before Advent starts, an invite-a-friend text in mid-December, a Christmas Eve reminder on December 23 or 24, and a thank-you follow-up the week after. Below are 14 ready-to-copy texts, each under 160 characters, plus the exact 2026 dates to send them.
That's the answer. The rest is copy, timing, and a few rules.
Quick note so you know where I'm coming from: I'm Mike, and I run Evant, a texting platform for churches. These templates work in any texting tool, including the ones I compete with. I'll keep my own pitch to one section near the end.
Here's the calendar I'd use this year. Real 2026 dates. Drop them straight into a scheduler.
Not everyone gets all eight. Volunteers get the volunteer ask, guests get the follow-up. That's what targeted church texting is for.
Swap in your church name, times and links. I counted the characters on every one, so keep your additions short.
1. "Advent starts this Sunday at [Church]! Four weeks to slow down and get ready for Christmas. Service at 10am. Save me a seat?"
2. "Hi [First Name], this Sunday we light the first Advent candle. Reply YES if we'll see you there and we'll save you a spot."
3. "Christmas Eve is our biggest night. We need 12 greeters and 6 kids helpers. Reply SERVE and we'll text you the details."
4. "You're on for the 5pm Christmas Eve service! Arrive at 4:15 at the side door. Reply C if you need to swap."
Specific beats polite. A number, a role, a reply word. More in how churches get more volunteer replies by text.
5. "Who's one person you could bring on Christmas Eve? Forward this: [Church] Christmas Eve, Dec 24 at 4pm and 6pm. Kids welcome."
6. "Christmas Eve is the easiest invite of the year. Who's one friend you'll ask this week? We'll save them a seat."
7. "Christmas Eve services: 4pm, 6pm, 11pm. Reply 4, 6 or 11 so we can plan seats and candles. Merry Christmas!"
8. "See you tomorrow! Christmas Eve at [Church], 4pm and 6pm. Parking fills fast, so come 15 min early. Kids program at 4pm."
Reply-a-number gets you a headcount per service. No form. More in text-to-RSVP for churches.
9. "Christmas Eve update: the 6pm service is filling up. Overflow seating opens in the fellowship hall with a live screen."
10. "Heads up: icy lot this afternoon. Use the north entrance and the volunteers will help you in. Drive safe, see you soon!"
11. "Thanks for being with us on Christmas Eve, [First Name]. It was a joy. New sermon series starts Jan 3. Hope to see you!"
12. "Was Christmas Eve your first time at [Church]? Reply HI and our pastor will text you back personally. No pressure."
13. "Because of you, [number] families got Christmas meals this year. Want to help us start 2027 strong? Give here: [link]"
14. "Last day for 2026 gifts! If [Church] has meant something to you this year, you can give in 30 seconds: [link]"
Put your own real number in template 13. If you don't have one, cut that line. A made-up number in a church text is a bad look.
Most church texting tools charge by the credit, and long texts burn more of them.
Clearstream's help center says a text longer than 160 standard characters costs 2 credits per person, and a text with a picture costs 3 credits per person (source). Text In Church counts 1 credit as a text up to 160 standard characters, says longer texts or emojis may use more, and charges 3 credits for images (source).
On a 600-person list, one picture text is 1,800 credits. Do that three times in December and a small plan is gone. So every template above is plain text. I broke down the math in Clearstream pricing 2026 and Text In Church pricing 2026.
Pricing and features checked November 2026. Vendors change these. Check their sites before you plan around them.
I'll be straight with you. Some of these are good.
Here's my issue with most of them. No calendar, and nobody counts characters. So you copy a lovely 240-character text and pay double.
Christmas is when churches text people they haven't texted all year. Mistakes happen here.
Okay, the pitch. One section, as promised.
In Evant you schedule every text in the calendar above in one sitting, and target each one to the right group. Reply-YES RSVPs count themselves. Keyword triggers handle SERVE and HI. Every customer gets a customizable Stripe donation page at no extra charge, so templates 13 and 14 point to a real giving link. No add-on.
And the people who never read texts? Older members on landlines get a voice call instead. Voice is on every plan at 1.5¢ a minute. Texts work on every phone, including basic and flip phones, and nobody downloads an app.
Plans start at $20 a month. We register your A2P 10DLC for you and give you a dedicated 10-digit number. If you're comparing tools, my best SMS platform for churches roundup lays them side by side.
Service times, an arrival tip, one line about kids. Under 160 characters. Don't send a sermon.
Four to six for the whole season, Advent through New Year's Eve. Volunteers and guests can get one or two extra.
Yes, when people have given you their number and agreed to hear from you, and you honor STOP replies. Most church texting platforms also require A2P 10DLC registration before you send at volume. I'm not a lawyer, so ask one if you're unsure.
160 characters or less. That's one standard SMS, and on credit-based platforms like Clearstream anything longer costs 2 credits per person.
If you're short on time, send three. The Advent kickoff on November 28. The Christmas Eve reminder on December 23. The thank-you on December 28. That's it. Three texts. Nobody gets annoyed, and nobody misses Christmas Eve.
Want the whole calendar loaded and scheduled tonight? I built Evant so you can do it in one sitting. Simple enough that a 5 year old could use it. I know because I am very simple myself.
